Mustache No More: A Woman's Guide to Facial Hair Removal

by Hailey Ellis

Facial hair removal is one of those uncomfortable subjects that doesn't get brought up in polite conversation. And yet, it's something that nearly every woman (especially those with dark hair) must wrestle with some time. Unless you're one of the lucky few born with invisible, pale blonde hair, this guide is for you. Here are four great options for removing unwanted facial hair.

1. Waxing

Waxing is the tried-and-true method of hair removal for many women. A warm, sticky wax is applied to unwanted hair, and a clean strip of cloth is applied on top of it. The cloth is then pulled quickly and firmly off, taking the hair with it. Some women find this method of removal painful, but it is quick and effective. Unfortunately, you have to wait for the hair to grow back between waxes, which some may find undesirable.

2. Sugaring

Sugaring is the sweeter alternative. It's similar to waxing, but the sticky medium used to trap unwanted hair is a warm, taffy-like candy which is applied to unwanted hair. Like waxing, a cloth strip is pressed to the sugar paste, which is then pulled from the face in a firm stroke.

Sugaring has the same benefits as waxing, but some women find it to be less painful. If you decide to try sugaring, call around to find out which of your local salons offers the service.

3. Bleaching

This is a good option if you think waxing and sugaring are too painful, and you don't have the patience to pluck your facial hair. Bleaching is a faux- hair removal method that gives the illusion of hairless skin. Special, skin-safe bleach is used to lighten dark hairs to a nearly-invisible blonde shade. If you choose this method, you will have to repeat the process every week or two, in order to bleach the dark new regrowth.

4. Laser hair removal

If you have particularly thick, bothersome facial hair, try laser hair removal. It's a process that uses lasers to permanently stop or reduce hair growth. This makes it a great option for women who don't have time to keep up with other hair removal methods. This method is especially effective on women with dark hair, since the lasers target dark pigmentation.

According to the Canadian Dermatology Association, most women will need between six and eight laser treatments, spaced eight weeks apart. Many women report that laser hair removal is no more painful than waxing. You can learn more about this option by talking to services such as The De Pieri Clinic.

These four methods of hair removal are a few safe and easy ways to rid yourself of that unwanted upper lip, chin, or brow hair. Try a few of them and see which one you like best.
